Capacity additions put in place during the pandemic demand boom have resulted in a systematic oversupply in the display industry that continues in 2024, but that oversupply will eventually turn to a shortage. That turn will happen within the 5-year timeframe of our forecast, according to DSCC’s Quarterly FPD Supply/Demand Report, released last week. With aggressive pricing and promotion of MiniLED LCD TVs, Chinese brands led by TCL and Hisense gained share and drove growth in the Advanced TV market in Q2’24, according to the latest update of DSCC’s Quarterly Advanced TV Shipment and Forecast Report, now available to subscribers. For the first time ever, shipments of MiniLED TVs surpassed shipments of OLED TVs, and MiniLED TVs captured more than 50% share of both units and revenues in the “super premium” category. Samsung fared poorly and lost share in Advanced TVs while TCL and Hisense gained share and Xiaomi emerged to break into the top five in the premium segment.Read More
After three consecutive quarters of Y/Y declines, the global TV market recovered for a Y/Y growth in Q2’24, fed by strong shipments to developed regions gearing up for major sporting events. Glass makers shipped 172M m2 of display glass in Q2’24, an increase of 12% Q/Q and 5% Y/Y according to the latest update to DSCC’s Display Glass Report, released last week. China’s portion of worldwide display glass demand increased to an all-time high of 73% in Q2’24. With the coming closure of the largest fab outside China, Sharp’s Sakai Display Products Gen 10, China’s share of display glass demand will only increase.
