LCD TV Panel Prices Declining in Q3 2025

For most of the history of the flat panel display industry, the Crystal Cycle of shortage and oversupply led to wild swings in LCD TV panel prices. That pattern stopped in 2023 and a new pattern emerged with more gentle fluctuations. At the halfway point of 2025, this new pattern has prices falling from a recent peak in Q1, continuing the unprecedented run of relative stability.

Flat Panel Display Fab Utilization Trending Down in Q3

After a rally in the first months of the year, flat panel display fab utilization peaked in March-April and has been trending down in Q3 2025, according to the latest release of Counterpoint Research’s Quarterly All Display Fab Utilization Report, issued last week. After a flurry of demand in China and distortions from US tariff policy earlier in the year, panel makers appear to be pulling back to avoid building inventory.

Farewell, Ross

As many of you may have already heard, Ross Young has resigned from his position at Counterpoint Research. For readers of the Counterpoint Display Weekly Review, this may not be a surprise since Ross has not been writing for our newsletter since the beginning of the year. Instead, he has been building an important series of new reports on automotive displays. Ross has posted to social media that he has retired and has plans for travel all around the world for this fall.

Counterpoint’s Advanced TV Cost Report Tracks Displays From QD-OLEDs to 116” LCDs

Counterpoint Research has released its latest Advanced TV Display Cost Report, with updates to OLED and LCD cost profiles. The H1 2025 edition includes updates to all sizes of WOLED panels and 55”+ LCD, including LCD with MiniLED backlights, and cost profiles for 55”, 65” and 77” QD-OLED panels from SDC. We have also added new cost profiles of 98”, 100”, 115” and 116” UHD-LCD panels, manufactured on Gen 8.5, Gen 8.6 and Gen 10.5 substrates in China. It covers the new gaming monitors from SDC, which are 49” and 34” QD-OLED panels.

US to Ban BOE OLED Panels in Samsung Patent Infringement Case

The US International Trade Commission (US ITC) has issued a Final Initial Determination (ID) on Samsung’s case against BOE, accusing the Chinese company of patent infringement. The ID recommends a limited exclusion order and a cease-and-desist order, which would prevent the import of BOE’s OLED panels and smartphones made with those panels.

LGD Books Big Profit on Guangzhou Sale but Posts Operating Loss in a Slow Q2 2025

LG Display booked its largest quarterly net profit in more than 10 years in Q2 2025 based on an extraordinary gain from its sale of the Gen 8.5 LCD fab in Guangzhou. The profit gave a shine to an otherwise bleak quarter, as the company’s streak of quarterly operating profits ended at two. LGD has now reported net losses in 11 of the last 13 quarters.
